Clinical Laboratory Supervisor

Under the direction of the Directors, the incumbent serves as a supervisor and lead technical expert in the Surgical Pathology Gross Labs at Mission Bay, Parnassus, and Mt Zion campuses, and in Autopsy at Parnassus. The incumbent is responsible for supervising and providing leadership and direction to licensed and non-licensed Pathologist Assistants and technical staff. The primary goals for this position are to train and educate residents and staff on grossing large and complex cancer resection specimens and create an efficient gross lab and Autopsy service.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and lead technical staff in the Surgical Pathology Gross Labs and Autopsy service
- Train and educate residents and staff on grossing large and complex cancer resection specimens
- Create an efficient gross lab and Autopsy service
- Interact and consult with laboratory directors, administrative directors, lab managers, and designees
- Determine the need to consult with pathologists and make operational decisions
- Troubleshoot and resolve specimen receiving issues
- Serve as a lead technical expert in grossing complex cancer specimens
- Participate in resident education and maintain the departmental and web-based surgical pathology manual
- Recruit, hire, train, complete performance evaluations, and resolve employee issues
- Provide orientation, complete competency assessments, maintain staff schedules, training, and compliance documentation, and operating procedure
- Maintain equipment for the laboratory and adhere to compliance requirements
- Provide operational support in other managers' absence and work variable schedules and rotate to other work sites as needed
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certified (i.e. HLT, HT, PA, CT)
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
- Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years laboratory experience in a health care setting or a combination of education and experience
- 3-5 years' experience as a supervisor or manager in a health care setting
- Relevant clinical and technical management experience
- Credentials which document training and qualification in specialized areas relevant to this position
- Evidence of continued improvement in relevant skills and knowledge through continuing education
- Demonstrated proficiency in teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology, specifically understanding of Pathology
- Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities and perform well under pressure to meet deadlines
- Excellent data entry, word processing, spelling, grammar, and editing skills
- Ability to assume leadership responsibilities and assist with operational oversight of Gross Rooms
