Key Responsibilities of the Consumer Loan Underwriter:

  • Ensure responsible lending practices while safeguarding the financial interests of both members and the credit union, including prompt processing of applications from various channels.
  • Thoroughly assess, analyze, and underwrite applications for personal, auto, and home equity loans in accordance with credit union policies and regulatory standards. Clearly document the rationale behind credit decisions.
  • Review credit reports, income statements, tax returns, and other relevant documents to evaluate the risk associated with borrowers.
  • Make informed decisions regarding loan approvals, denials, or conditions based on established guidelines and risk thresholds.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies, staying updated on changes in consumer lending laws and regulations.
  • Act as a liaison for originators and consumer processing teams, collaborating with colleagues and vendors to gather necessary information and resolve discrepancies.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on consumer lending products and underwriting guidelines, providing guidance and support to staff.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with internal teams and external vendors to effectively support consumer lending initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of consumer loan policies, credit criteria, interest rates, and required documentation for various loan types is essential.
  • Ability to interpret major credit bureau reports and financial statements, including tax returns, is necessary.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex situations effectively.
  • Intermediate mathematical skills are required for calculations involving decimals, percentages, and fractions.
  • Requires sound judgment to apply established practices to unique situations, with a focus on thorough investigation and creativity.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and experience with consumer loan software programs are essential.
  • Compliance with all consumer lending regulatory requirements is mandatory.
