The Manager of Resource Description and Processing is responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the Metadata Management Unit. This role ensures that library materials are received, described, and processed accurately for optimal discovery within library systems. The manager will coordinate workflows within Technical Services for physical materials acquired by the library and supervise a team of three full-time staff members along with one part-time staff member. Additionally, the manager will oversee part-time student employees.
Key Responsibilities:
1. **Operational Leadership:**
- Direct the daily operations and management of the Metadata Management Unit.
- Provide supervision, management, and technical guidance within the unit.
- Plan and oversee routine operations and special projects.
2. **Workflow Management:**
- Assess and enhance workflows for physical materials to improve efficiency in resource management.
- Plan and manage projects related to receiving, cataloging, processing, and routing library resources.
- Contribute to strategic planning goals for the unit and library.
3. **Staff Management:**
- Supervise and provide effective leadership to the Metadata Management Unit staff.
- Oversee the hiring and training of student employees and ensure staff performance evaluations are conducted.
- Develop training materials and facilitate skill development among staff members.
4. **Technical Expertise:**
- Offer technical support for the library's LMS to streamline processes and ensure compliance with standards.
- Manage import profiles, normalization rules, and local templates to enhance discoverability for users.
- Serve as the primary contact for resolving cataloging issues and participate in special collections metadata projects.
5. **Collaboration and Representation:**
- Act as the library's representative on relevant committees and teams.
- Collaborate with other departments to establish best practices and manage communications for bindery workflows.
Qualifications:
- A Master's degree or equivalent experience is required.
- 2-4 years of relevant experience in a library setting.
- Familiarity with cataloging, classification, and subject analysis including MARC, RDA, and LC Classification is essential.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- A Master's in Library and Information Science or equivalent is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in an academic library setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in original cataloging and authority control.
- Experience with library management systems and external vendor collaboration is advantageous.
