Perioperative Instrument Technician

Job Summary

The Instrument Room perioperative tech will assist the instrument room staff in transporting instrumentation and instrument-related items between the Central Sterile Processing Department and the Operating Room. The runner will deliver necessary items when requested by staff from either department.

About the Role

This position is part of the Brighton Center for Specialty Care, a new University of Michigan Ambulatory Care facility dedicated to providing high-quality health care services for adults and children. As a member of our team, you will contribute to creating an ideal experience for our patients, families, and employees.

Responsibilities
  • Pick up and transport clinical instrumentation, MPU scopes, and clinic scopes
  • Transfer instruments, instrument carts, or implants from the CSPD to the OR or vice versa
  • Put sterile instruments away on shelves in the OR area
  • Move/deliver/pickup carts/bins/racks of used instruments to the OR/CSPD/Hospital and bring new carts to OR when the lift is not functioning
  • Move carts of sterile instruments to the OR from CSPD when the lift is not functioning
  • Take down implant trays to the OR for restocking or return stocked implant trays to the CSPD
  • Replace full sterilization carts in instrument assembly areas
  • Take items off instrument lift or place items on instrument lift
  • Assist in loading dirty lift in OR when necessary due to backup of malfunctioning lift
  • Unload dirty lift with used case carts and replace with new case carts
  • Sending sterile instruments to the OR for storage
  • Move instruments pans from storage or replace instrument pans in storage
  • Assist instrument room staff in retrieving instrument pans from storage when requested
  • Store washed and assembled instruments pans in storage
  • Check various areas on the 1st floor or in CSPD regularly for any instruments-related needs
  • Check offices for implant trays that have been restocked and are ready to be sent down
  • Check for sterile loads of instruments ready to be replaced in OR
  • Retrieve minor items requested by staff
  • Minor cleaning duties such as wipe down surfaces, organizing work area, replacing trash bags, etc.
  • Assist staff in the operation of the instrument lift
  • Loading and unloading cart washer
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary
  • Ability to work flexible shifts
  • Ability to lift, stand, walk, and bend for long periods at a time
  • Teamwork ethic
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Push/pull
  • Ability to take direction and work independently in a busy clinical environment
Work Schedule

Shift: 11a-730p, 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday. Rotating/occasional weekends.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the Service Employees International Union - Healthcare Michigan (SEIU), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
