Professional School Guidance Specialist with a Focus on Student Success

About the Role

Spectrum Center Schools and Programs, a leading provider of alternative and special education programs, is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Professional School Guidance Specialist to join our award-winning team.

As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in helping students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally through individual and group counseling, and by collaborating with educators, parents, and other professionals to create a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Providing individual and group counseling sessions to help students address interpersonal or family problems that impact their academic performance.
  2. Conducting interviews with students, family members, and school personnel to gather information needed to assess student social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment to school and the community.
  3. Maintaining regular contact with students' parents/guardians to inform them of their child's progress, areas of difficulty, and any changes or situations in home life that may affect school performance.
  4. Developing and updating Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIPs) as needed, in adherence to company, school, state, and federal regulations and procedures.
  5. Attending and participating in IEP team meetings, and facilitating at the discretion of the school district.
  6. Collaborating with education and social services professionals to develop appropriate agency services for students and their families.
  7. Providing case management functions for students, which includes coordination of parent meetings, emergency transportation requests, disciplinary actions, and coordination with outside therapists.
  8. Collaborating with teachers, parents/guardians, district personnel, and service providers to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems, while establishing and maintaining effective public relations and projecting a positive company image.
  9. Ensuring the use of positive teaching methods by conducting monthly climate data through direct observation of classroom staff's implementation of IEP goals and PBIPs.
  10. Providing guidance, consultation, and assistance to teachers in the development of classroom schedules, maintenance of student data systems, and facilitation of student transition plans to ensure appropriate curriculum, schedule, and services based on each student's IEP and other applicable goals.
  11. Assessing student progress through consistent review of classroom data collection and recording systems, and providing applicable training and guidance to classroom staff accordingly to address student needs.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  1. A Master's degree or higher in educational counseling, therapy, social work, or a closely related field.
  2. Meet state and district requirements for appropriate licensing or credentials, including licenses such as Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Educational Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Certified School Social Work Specialist (C-SSWS), Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (DCSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker Psychotherapy (LCSW-R), Pupil Personal Services (PPS), and other state credentials authorizing provision of school-based counseling.
  3. Prior experience working with students with emotional disorders and challenging behaviors in an education or classroom setting.
  4. Prior experience and highly knowledgeable in applied behavior analysis, preferably.
  5. Prior experience working with students in a special education program setting, preferably.
  6. Advanced oral and written communication, instruction, curriculum, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem-solving, and decision-making ability.
  7. Knowledge of relevant technology, including experience with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, database entry, and basic office equipment.

Estimated salary: $65,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
