Job Title: Controller

Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (LMM) is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee and manage accounting and finance operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in financial management and a passion for promoting shalom (peace, well-being) and justice (right relationships) through a Christian ministry of service and advocacy.

Job Summary

The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting and reporting activities, including the development and monitoring of control systems to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results and analysis. The successful candidate will provide leadership to the accounting team and work closely with senior level executives and departmental leadership and teams throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise the accounting team and manage all functions of the accounting department, including general accounting and reporting, accounts receivable, revenue recognition and deposits, cash management, accounts payable and payroll.
  • Establish and maintain the organization's overall accounting systems, procedures, and policies to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • Direct all preparation, analysis and reporting of financial information, including budgets, planning, and required filings and reports.
  • Manage all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and safeguards to protect company assets and examine accounting records to assess accuracy.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting, ensuring that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.
  • Identify challenges and gaps across accounting and financial systems, technology, process and people, and recommend opportunities to improve automation, efficiency, and scalability.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance, with a Certified Public Accountant or Master's degree preferred. At least 10 years of progressive accounting and financial experience, with 7 years in a management role, preferably within a nonprofit setting.
