Molecular Cytogenetic Technologist

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a skilled Molecular Cytogenetic Technologist to join our team in the UPMC Cytogenetic Laboratory (UCL). This role will be a key contributor to our state-of-the-art facility, where you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on life-changing medicine.
Responsibilities:- Maintain accurate records of specimen processing, including accessioning of samples, entering of patient data and results into the departmental computer system, and cross-referencing to cytogenetic specimens.
- Process amniotic fluid, CVS, or tissue specimens for analysis of uncultured cells, determining the number of slides to be made based on the size of the sample and clinical diagnosis.
- Clean and maintain supplies and equipment, monitoring the temperature of incubators, refrigerators, freezers, and water baths to ensure optimal equipment performance.
- Determine molecular cytogenetic diagnosis for patients in consultation with Senior Technologists and/or Lab Manager, Supervisor, or Lab Director, preparing and printing color images of analysis on each case for inclusion in patient charts.
- Run appropriate fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) or microarray comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) protocols based on referral diagnosis, utilizing proper probes and detection methods for optimal visualization of fluorescent signals.
- Analyze aCGH findings and determine diagnosis in consultation with Senior Technologists and/or Lab Supervisor, Manager, or Lab Director, preparing and printing images of aCGH analysis for inclusion in patient charts.
- Perform various additional testing for development of probes, new techniques, and development of additional molecular cytogenetic tests to maintain the laboratory's state-of-the-art technology.
- Responsible for following mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that affected or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
- One year of molecular lab experience is preferred.
- Minimum of one year of college laboratory experience to acquire a basic level of laboratory knowledge and expertise in the operation of equipment and performance of clinical diagnostic testing procedures.
- Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
- Analytical ability to perform advanced genetic tests, interpret and analyze test results, noting abnormalities and discrepancies, including determination of causality, and troubleshoot and maintain instruments.
- Ability to prepare cultures using sterile techniques, and to prepare and analyze slides and karyotypes, and graphs.
- Ability to color discriminate between various shades of reds, blues, greens necessary for analyzing probe signal data under the fluorescent microscope.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to appropriately respond to telephone inquiries from physicians, hospital personnel, patients, and other external laboratories and vendors concerning specimens, results, and laboratory reagents.
