Cytogenetics Laboratory Technologist

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a skilled Cytogenetic Technologist or Specialty Cytogenetic Technologist to enhance the UPMC Cytogenetic Laboratory (UCL). We are looking for dedicated professionals willing to work a daylight schedule of 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with rotating responsibilities during weekends and holidays.
The UCL is equipped with cutting-edge technology, providing you the chance to contribute to transformative medical advancements. Utilizing both conventional cytogenetic methods and molecular cytogenetics techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and genome-wide array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH), the UCL conducts chromosome studies on diverse specimens, ensuring our patients receive critical insights.
Compensation: The starting salary for the Cytogenetic Technologist position is $26.56/hour, with placement in the appropriate title and salary based on individual qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Capture images of the requisite number of cells for each case using the Department's computerized imaging system. Prepare and analyze karyograms for chromosomal abnormalities.
- Maintain and clean laboratory supplies and equipment. Monitor environmental conditions in incubators to support culture growth.
- Assist in training students and hospital staff in cytogenetic procedures.
- Prepare slides from harvested cells and perform necessary banding and staining techniques for optimal chromosome visibility.
- Conduct additional testing as needed, determining when specialized techniques are warranted based on initial analyses.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for weekends and holidays, handling urgent cytogenetic diagnostics for newborns and communicating preliminary results to healthcare providers.
- Analyze metaphase chromosomes using microscopy or image analysis systems, counting chromosomes and assessing their structure for genetic defects.
- Support Lead Technologists in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
- Retrieve and process samples for analysis, initiating cultures with sterile techniques and determining the number of cultures based on sample size and clinical context.
- Perform subcultures as necessary, monitoring growth and determining harvest readiness.
- Adhere to mandatory reporting protocols for any incidents affecting patient care.
- Change culture media according to established protocols, selecting appropriate media for incubators.
- Assist in organizing and directing ancillary tasks performed by support staff and volunteers.
- Maintain accurate records of culture initiation, growth, manipulation, and harvests for all specimens.
- Monitor specimen growth to determine optimal harvest times for primary and subcultures.
Qualifications for Cytogenetic Technologist:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry is required.
- Minimum of one year of laboratory experience in a job or academic setting is required.
- Strong analytical skills to perform advanced genetic tests and interpret results, identifying abnormalities and troubleshooting equipment.
- Proficient in sterile techniques for culture preparation and slide analysis.
- Effective interpersonal skills for communication with hospital staff, students, and external laboratories.
- ASCP certification is preferred.
Qualifications for Specialty Cytogenetic Technologist:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry is required.
- A minimum of three years of clinical cytogenetics laboratory experience is necessary to achieve a professional level of expertise.
- Certification as a Technologist in Cytogenetics through the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathologists [CG(ASCP)] is required.
- Must maintain certification through continuing education.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care and assess patient data effectively.
- Strong analytical abilities for advanced genetic testing and troubleshooting.
- Proficient in sterile techniques and slide preparation.
Licensure and Certifications:
- CG(ASCP) certification is required and must be maintained.
- Compliance with Act 34 is necessary.
