Lead Genetic Technologist Job Summary

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Lead Genetic Technologist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory, you will be responsible for reviewing clinical analyses of patients' chromosomes, determining cytogenetic diagnoses, and coordinating the workflow of other laboratory personnel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnostic Interpretation: Create patient reports, including diagnostic interpretation, for review by Lab Directors.
  • Incident Reporting: Follow mandatory reporting procedures for incidents or serious events affecting patient care.
  • Performance Evaluations: Provide input into performance evaluations of laboratory personnel.
  • Procedure Maintenance: Assist Lab Manager in maintaining and updating procedure manuals.
  • Training and Orientation: Coordinate the orientation and training of new technologists and lab assistants.
  • Quality Control: Monitor specimen turnaround time, coordinate daily workload, and ensure quality control and quality assurance measures.
  • Instrument Maintenance: Ensure staff compliance with instrument maintenance protocols.
  • Specialized Techniques: Identify when additional techniques are required for accurate diagnoses.
  • Case Review: Review completed cases, discuss abnormal findings with the laboratory manager/supervisor, and telephone routine results to physician offices.
  • Training and Education: Assist in teaching and training students and hospital professionals.
Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry or related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of four years' experience in a clinical cytogenetics or clinical molecular genetics laboratory.
  • Certification: Certification as a Technologist in Cytogenetics or a Technologist in Molecular Biology through examination by the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (CG(ASCP) or MB(ASCP)).
  • Maintenance of Certification: Maintenance of Certification through continuing education credits or a PhD in lieu of ASCP certification.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CG (ASCP) or MB(ASCP) Certification: Required and must be maintained or a PhD is required in lieu of ASCP certification.
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology: Membership required.
  • Act 34: Clearance required.
