Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist I is a vital member of the operating room team at UNC Health, responsible for ensuring the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This role requires expertise in sterile and aseptic technique, as well as knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform technical skills duties in all operating room specialty service areas, adhering to accepted standards of process.
  • Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
  • Follow aseptic technique, identifying and addressing contamination and/or breaks in technique.
  • Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies.
  • Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
  • Participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner.
  • Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities affecting the surgical procedure.
  • Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, communicating with the surgical team.
  • Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital-wide emergency management plans.
  • Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
  • Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
  • Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and preceptor as needed.
Requirements
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program
  • Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech
  • 0-3 years of professional experience
  • Successful completion of service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
  • Strong communication skills/customer service relations
  • Excellent organizational/priority setting skills
