Position Overview


The Surgical Technician III demonstrates a profound understanding of sterile practices and possesses comprehensive knowledge of specialized instruments and equipment essential for various specialty procedures.

This role requires proficiency in operating all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment relevant to at least one tertiary specialty service.

Under the guidance of the physician and supervision of the lead nurse, the Surgical Technician III provides patient care in an ambulatory care environment.


Key Responsibilities

The Surgical Technician III is accountable for maintaining a well-organized surgical field and efficiently passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
They must anticipate and prioritize the needs throughout the procedural steps.
Participation in sponge, needle, and instrument counts is required as per procedural protocols.
The technician is responsible for preserving surgical specimens for pathology evaluation.
They assist in the ordering and stocking of specialty supplies in accordance with departmental guidelines and management direction.

Collaborating with a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technician III serves as a technical expert in at least one tertiary specialty.

They provide scrub services for major cardiovascular and thoracic procedures, ensuring high levels of physician satisfaction.
The role includes preparing and conducting training focused on technical performance related to specialty services.
Additionally, they act as a preceptor for perioperative personnel rotating through scrub roles and may serve as a second circulator during major procedures.
The technician collaborates with surgeons to proactively address case requirements while performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.
In partnership with clinical leadership, they contribute to workflow process improvements, organizational effectiveness, and demonstrate ongoing career development.
Responsibilities also include transporting and delivering items, equipment, and medications throughout the facility, with limited access to medication storage areas.
The Surgical Technician III actively participates in quality initiatives, goal achievement, and clinical outcome improvement activities.
They support effective communication with patients and their families and work collaboratively with administrative and operations staff.
Gathering patient data through interviews and observations is also part of their duties.
They assist the physician by acting as a liaison for scheduling specialty testing and consultations.
Regular, punctual attendance in accordance with organizational policies is expected.
Compliance with all relevant policies and procedures is mandatory.

Qualifications

Education and Training
High school diploma or equivalent; and

Successful completion of:
o Surgical Technology training program; or
o U.S. Military Medical Corps Training; or
o An equivalent on-the-job training program with seven (7) years of recent surgical tech experience.

Licensure and Certification
National certification as a Surgical Technologist is required from one of the following:
o Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - renewed every 4 years; or
o Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) - renewed annually.
Current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification must be maintained.

Experience
A minimum of one (1) year of surgical technician experience in a tertiary service is required.
The candidate should be a technical expert in at least one tertiary service and demonstrate competency in scrubbing major procedures in cardiovascular and thoracic specialty services.
