POSITION SUMMARY: The Medication Administration Specialist is responsible for delivering medication services and providing direct care to residents, while fostering a positive physical and emotional environment.
This role includes assisting residents with daily living activities, housekeeping, laundry, and other essential tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the daily management of the medication room and medication services as instructed by the Health Services Director (HSD), adhering to physician directives, state regulations, and nursing standards.
- Process physician medication and treatment orders in compliance with state laws and nursing regulations.
- Administer and assist with the self-administration of both routine and non-routine medications according to physician orders and regulatory standards.
- Execute simple treatments and monitor residents as directed by the HSD, following physician orders and regulations.
- Maintain precise records of medication and treatment services provided or omitted, including controlled substances, in each resident's clinical documentation.
- Coordinate with pharmacies for medication orders and refills.
- Report all medication discrepancies in accordance with policy.
- Document and communicate changes in resident conditions, incidents, and accidents to the HSD, physician, and family members as necessary.
- Engage in regular communication with physicians, pharmacies, external services, residents, and families regarding medication and care services.
- Provide direct care to residents while upholding their dignity, independence, and choices, regularly observing their physical and mental conditions and reporting any changes to the HSD or relevant directors.
- Assist with or deliver care services as outlined in the resident's service plan.
- Welcome residents, visitors, and staff courteously, respecting dignity and confidentiality standards.
- Adhere to community fire safety and infection control protocols, promptly reporting any unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Serve meals in the dining area, assist residents during mealtime, and help with dining room and kitchen maintenance.
- Aid in lifting, moving, and transporting residents using proper techniques or assistive devices as specified in the resident's service plan.
- Support tours, move-ins, move-outs, and transfers, coordinating personal care services with colleagues and responding to assistance requests promptly.
- Perform First Aid and initiate emergency response protocols as per policy and regulations.
- Ensure medications and equipment are stored properly and maintain cleanliness in the medication room.
- Dispose of outdated or discontinued medications in accordance with policy.
- Participate in training, in-services, and staff meetings.
- Carry out other assigned duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of one year of personal care experience with older adults is preferred or as mandated by state regulations.
Must possess state-required medication pass certification or equivalent, complete necessary training, and successfully pass the medication competency assessment.
Proficiency in word processing is required. Current CPR certification, First Aid training, and Food Handlers permit are also necessary as per state regulations. Completion of all state-required training is mandatory.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent knowledge and skills obtained through a combination of education, training, and experience.
