This position is crucial for supporting first-generation and low-income college students as they navigate their educational journeys in both two-year and four-year institutions. The Higher Education Success Advisor will maintain regular communication with a designated group of students and facilitate activities that promote peer support.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential to this role. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed:

  • Work collaboratively with high school programs to ensure a smooth transition to college, enhancing student retention and achievement.
  • Design and conduct workshops and seminars aimed at developing life skills and improving academic performance for high school students.
  • Connect students with available campus resources, support services, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Assist students in completing the necessary documentation for PSS services.
  • Guide students through the processes of college and financial aid applications.
  • Support students in establishing and pursuing their individual educational and career objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with college administration and student service organizations.
  • Advocate for students to ensure their needs are adequately addressed.
  • Provide tutoring and instruction in study skills to enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, retention, and progression.
  • Utilize Salesforce for data entry and tracking purposes.
  • Prepare reports on the status of student caseloads as required.
  • Stay informed about trends in post-secondary education and challenges faced by students through ongoing research.
Qualifications

The following qualifications are necessary for this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, or a related field.
  • Experience in case management, counseling, admissions, or financial aid is preferred.
Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish) is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with FAFSA and financial aid processes.
  • Understanding of higher education systems and the barriers faced by first-generation and low-income students.
  • Ability to effectively engage with a diverse range of college and community groups.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify problems, gather data, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Integrity and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in project management.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in documentation.
  • Proficient in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and internet usage.
Additional Requirements

This position may require:

  • Regular travel, including occasional overnight trips.
  • A valid driver's license.
