Career Ladder:
The three levels within this position are distinguished by the degree of independence, supervision required, specialized skill set, and the ability to mentor new employees in the use of all equipment, in addition to the capacity to lead and achieve established departmental objectives.
Level One (I): Entry-Level Procedure Technicians - Technicians new to the organization require training and regular direct supervision or guidance from a more experienced technician. This typically includes orientation to the department's infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures, and routines.
During this phase, the technician must demonstrate the ability to progress toward proficient and competent performance of required tasks.
Success in this level necessitates independent responsibility for performing general procedures as defined by the department, specimen handling, and high-level disinfection (HLD) in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated documentation while providing high-quality care within a team environment.
Level Two (II): Competent Procedure Technicians - With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all job responsibilities and consistently shows initiative to assist in other areas of the department as needed. Exhibits consistent attention to detail when performing procedural tasks. Completes all associated documentation for imaging and specimen management.
A Level Two technician also serves as a mentor for newly hired technicians, directly orienting them to equipment, computer programs, HLD, as well as departmental and hospital policies.
They are recognized as subject matter experts in downtime procedures and act as super-users when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department.
They assist in mentoring newer technicians by providing one-on-one support alongside the RN HLD Champion. Anticipates supply and equipment needs related to daily procedures and operations. Capable of effectively troubleshooting issues that arise within the department.
Responsible for preparing the department and staff for evaluations and participates in the collection of data related to performance audits.
Adheres to and maintains all Instructions for Use (IFUs), introducing changes to staff as necessary. Coordinates new equipment education presentations by suppliers and/or vendors.
Level Three (III): Expert Procedure Technicians - In addition to the responsibilities of a Level Two technician, a Level Three technician is skilled in assisting with the most advanced procedures offered by the department. This includes additional orientation time and competency.
They are responsible for establishing and maintaining new technology machines and equipment brought into the department at the request of physicians.
They collaborate closely with company representatives to establish training and work alongside unit leadership to determine new competency checklists for each new procedure.
Level Three status requires a minimum of one year of progressively responsible professional work experience as a procedure technician.
Eligibility for advancement consideration requires the technician to be in good performance standing and demonstrate the ability to perform position duties.
Readiness for movement within the levels is assessed by the manager, based on successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder.
Advancement to a higher level is contingent upon departmental needs and requires final approval from the Ambulatory Nursing Director in collaboration with Human Resources.
Individuals hired externally with relevant experience may enter the career level as a Level Three to serve in a lead role based on operational needs of the department.
