Job Summary

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center seeks a highly skilled and experienced Police Detective-Campus Police to serve as a first-line supervisor of police and security activities. This individual will conduct initial and follow-up Internal Affairs-related investigations of Criminal and Administrative complaints, oversee shift shortages, and provide direction to subordinate personnel at crime scenes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough and impartial investigations of Criminal and Administrative complaints.
  • Review and maintain compliance with Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) reports and daily crime logs.
  • Participate in the Accreditation Team and assist with CLERY reporting responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with the Shelby County Attorney General's Office and the United States Attorney's Office.
  • Supervise police and security officers, ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate the duties of subordinate personnel at crime scenes, review reports, and maintain direct communication with shift personnel.
  • Respond to calls, investigate incidents, arrest suspects as necessary, and write detailed reports.
  • Assist with training coordination and implementation for UTHSC Police department personnel.
  • Serve as point-of-contact for UTHSC's Special Events Department.
  • Work closely with the Patrol Commander to ensure police and/or security coverage for special events.
  • Participate in the Administrative/Accreditation Team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of work experience in law enforcement.
  • P.O.S.T. certification within six (6) months from date of hire and maintenance of certification.
  • Completion of an approved Investigators Training Course within one (1) year of hire.
  • Valid driver's license as a condition of employment.
  • Age 21 or older.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise officers and coordinate the duties of subordinate personnel at crime scenes.
  • Ability to review reports and maintain direct communication with all personnel assigned to a respective shift.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to respond to calls, investigate incidents, arrest suspects as necessary, and write detailed reports.
  • Ability to ensure personnel adhere to all departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to function as the first-line supervisor and oversee the activities of police and security officers.
  • Ability to instruct, guide, and train officers on proper crime classifications on reports and appropriate charges on arrest tickets.
  • Good working knowledge of investigative techniques and ability to communicate effectively with individuals orally and in written format.
  • Ability to produce clear and investigative documents.
  • Ability to provide case presentations to a Federal and/or State Grand Jury upon request.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise testimony in any court of law.
  • Ability to work in partnership with officers and investigators from other jurisdictions on investigations crossing jurisdictional boundaries.
