About the Department:

The Division for Enrollment Management, in collaboration with the George Mason University community and as part of the Office of the Provost, enhances student recruitment and retention through strategic enrollment initiatives. This includes overseeing admissions, providing financial aid services, and managing the Mason Student Services Center, a centralized resource for student services. The Division's efforts are focused on achieving institutional enrollment objectives by prioritizing the student and family experience, fostering transparency, and utilizing data for informed decision-making.

About the Position:

The Financial Aid Counselor plays a critical role in managing a caseload of students, guiding them and their families through the financial aid process. This position involves advising students on financial aid eligibility, application procedures, available funding programs, and financial management strategies. The counselor is responsible for reviewing applications for accuracy and verification to assess financial need and determine award packages. Additionally, the Financial Aid Counselor engages in community outreach and provides information on financial aid matters, which may require attendance at information sessions and student orientation programs during evenings and weekends. A comprehensive understanding of Federal Title IV, State, and institutional financial aid regulations is essential for this role. The incumbent will exercise professional judgment in advising and processing appeals, including Income Reduction requests, Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeals, dependency appeals, and cost of attendance adjustments.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist students and families in navigating the financial aid process;
  • Manage a caseload of students, advising on eligibility, application procedures, and financial management strategies;
  • Review applications for accuracy and verification to determine financial need and award packages;
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Federal Title IV, State, and institutional financial aid regulations while managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment;
  • Conduct financial aid data reviews, verification, awarding, and packaging of student financial aid files;
  • Provide exceptional customer service while demonstrating patience and understanding to students and families seeking financial aid;
  • Review various reports to ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional rules regarding financial aid;
  • Track documents, run needs analysis, review tax documents, and complete verification as necessary;
  • Process professional judgment appeals and ensure accurate repackaging of students after appeals are reviewed;
  • Utilize federal resources to verify aid eligibility as needed;
  • Review summer aid applications and award federal, state, and institutional funding, making necessary adjustments for compliance;
  • Participate in community outreach activities and provide guidance on financial aid, which may include evening and weekend commitments.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience is required;
  • In-depth knowledge of federal student aid regulations;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and collaborative skills;
  • Commitment to providing high-quality service to students and families;
  • Ability to manage communications with students and families effectively;
  • Capability to multitask and handle various responsibilities in a high-volume environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree preferred;
  • Familiarity with Ellucian Banner financial aid software.
