About the Department:

About the Position:

The Financial Aid Counselor plays a crucial role in managing a caseload of students, guiding them and their families through the financial aid process. This position involves advising students on financial aid eligibility, application processes, available funding programs, and financial management strategies. The counselor is responsible for reviewing applications for accuracy and verification to determine financial need and award packages. Additionally, the Financial Aid Counselor engages in community outreach and provides information on financial aid matters, which may include participation in evening and weekend events.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist students and families in navigating the financial aid process;
  • Manage a caseload of students, advising on eligibility, application procedures, and financial management strategies;
  • Review applications for accuracy and verification to assess financial need and determine award packages;
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of Federal Title IV, State, and institutional financial aid regulations while managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment;
  • Conduct financial aid data reviews, verification, awarding, and packaging of student financial aid files;
  • Provide exceptional customer service, demonstrating patience and understanding to students and families seeking financial aid;
  • Review various reports to ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional rules;
  • Track documents, perform needs analysis, and complete verification as necessary;
  • Process professional judgment appeals and ensure accurate repackaging of awards;
  • Utilize federal resources to verify aid eligibility;
  • Review summer aid applications and adjust awards for compliance;
  • Participate in community outreach activities and provide guidance on financial aid matters.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience;
  • In-depth knowledge of federal student aid regulations;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Commitment to providing high-quality service to students and families;
  • Ability to manage communications effectively with students and families;
  • Capability to multitask in a high-volume environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree preferred;
  • Familiarity with Ellucian Banner financial aid software.
