Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Health Nurse Senior to join our team at the Virginia Department of Health. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong leadership and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of public health principles and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide non-supervisory leadership and serve as a nursing program expert in one or more nursing services/programs district wide.
  • Develop program goals, objectives, policies and procedures, and report program performance to funding sources and agency staff.
  • Serve as primary contact for staff and external inquirers about the program/service, and monitor service delivery for compliance to applicable policies and procedures.
  • Promote the program to increase utilization and public awareness, and perform nursing assessments, lab tests, and case management.
  • May supervise support staff and participate in emergency operations, including assisting state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Requirements
  • Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia.
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR, able to be fit tested and perform fit testing for other staff in accordance with OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) regulations.
  • Experience functioning in a leadership role, with experience and ability to function independently in the home/clinic/community/school settings and prioritize workload.
  • Exercises sound nursing judgment, effective verbal, written, interpersonal/physical assessment skills, and experience and ability to enter, review, analyze data and statistics and produce reports and/or recommendations from such information.
  • Experience and knowledge of nursing process, health maintenance, disease process, physical and behavioral sciences, case management process, and basic principles of epidemiology.
  • Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, and knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications preferred, including internet, Microsoft Office, and Google Mail applications.
  • Experience and ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds, and may travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required.
