Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Public Health Nurse to join our team at the Virginia Department of Health. As a Public Health Nurse, you will play a critical role in promoting health equity and advancing the well-being of our citizens and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes, and schools, as well as other community or congregate care settings.
  • Perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management.
  • Participate in public health emergencies and community health assessments.
  • May supervise support staff.
Requirements
  • Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or a compact state.
  • Requires BLS certification.
  • Requires adherence to all safety policies, including immunization, driver safety policies, and all other state policies.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing, analyzes problems, situations, and suggests solutions, leadership, follow directions, and establishes priorities.
  • Skilled in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling techniques.
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member, and relate to the public.
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology, immunizations, basic nursing science, medical terminology, and case management.
  • May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required.
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional study in the area of health promotion or public health is preferred.
  • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion.
