Program Overview

The Schools, Parents, and Community Engaged (SPACE) Program is a school-based initiative that provides community support, focusing on African students, their families, and educational institutions to foster environments where children feel secure, valued, and prepared to learn. We engage with African immigrant students both in educational settings and within their families, as well as in the wider community.

Position Overview

The Community Engagement and Events Specialist will collaborate closely with supervisors to plan and execute CAIRO's various activities and events. While this role primarily supports the SPACE Program, it will also involve collaboration with other departments as necessary. A keen attention to detail regarding schedules, names, and numbers is crucial, along with a proactive approach. The ideal candidate will possess proven experience in project management or logistics and a strong understanding of CAIRO's mission and the communities we serve.

Position Type: Full-time, non-exempt, with occasional evening and weekend work required for events. This role reports to one of our SPACE Program Managers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate interdepartmental activities and schedule events following thorough planning and development.
  • Identify suitable venues for programs and secure reservations for their use.
  • Arrange transportation for students by booking buses and coordinating drivers.
  • Promote events through CAIRO's communication channels and local media when appropriate.
  • Oversee and assess all student activity events, maintaining regular communication with supervisors regarding student matters.
  • Manage the budget and process all payments related to activities, providing timely expenditure reports.
  • Maintain and regularly update a comprehensive calendar of activities and events accessible to all staff.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to facilitate student activities that encourage leadership, participation in CAIRO's decision-making, and enrichment of student life, while managing the associated budget.
  • Assist SPACE Agents in various schools and undertake special assignments as directed by administration or supervisors.
  • Act as co-advisor for Program Managers, guiding student activities and overseeing various events, including sports, STEAM initiatives, field trips, and peer mentoring programs.
  • Create, edit, publish, and disseminate content (text, images, videos, flyers) that fosters meaningful connections and encourages community engagement, including quarterly newsletters, social media updates, and website content.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: 1-2 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively engage with students, faculty, and the public.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Strong initiative, ability to prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Competence in troubleshooting and resolving issues independently.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and familiarity with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with Mailchimp and WordPress is preferred but not required.

Education

  • Strongly preferred: Bachelor's degree in communications, English, or a related field.

Work Environment

  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • This is a hybrid remote position, requiring in-person attendance for events and meetings.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds (event supplies) is necessary.
