Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Environmental Investigator to join our team at the Department of Toxic Substances Control. As an Environmental Investigator, you will play a critical role in enforcing California's Hazardous Waste Control Law and protecting human health and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate violations of the California Hazardous Waste Control Law by responding to complaints, tips, and other information that alleges illegal hazardous waste activities in the state.
  • Develop and execute investigative plans and methods, including obtaining hazardous waste samples.
  • Conduct undercover surveillance and travel throughout the state as needed.
  • Write and execute search warrants, serve subpoenas, and make arrests.
  • Draft concise official investigatory reports that can be submitted for legal prosecution.
  • Testify in court and administrative hearings about case findings.
Requirements
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred, but not required. Must pass Spanish Fluency Examination.
  • POST Certification preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Incumbents that do not possess a valid Peace Officer Regular Basic or Specialized Investigator Basic Course POST certificate must attend and complete the academy during the first year of employment in order to pass probation.
Working Conditions

This position is located at our Field office in San Diego, CA.

The position requires a valid California Driver's License (CDL) and a Background Investigation, Medical Clearance, and Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.
