Position Overview:

Northrop Grumman Defense Systems sector (NGDS) is on the lookout for a Principal Systems Engineer to join our expanding team of diverse professionals. The ideal candidate will exhibit motivation, energy, and a willingness to learn. This role involves collaborating within a small team dedicated to the Mission Planning and Decision Support Operating Unit (OU), focusing on Agile development of MS Windows and cloud-based solutions, encompassing User Story development, UI/UX design, external system interface architecture, and system integration and testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop Concept of Operations (CONOPs), conduct functional analysis, allocate requirements, decompose tasks, and define interfaces to translate customer needs into software specifications.
  • Create User Stories and Acceptance Criteria for mission planning products.
  • Collaborate closely with the software development team to implement new functionalities and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Support iterative development of UI/UX concepts and designs based on customer feedback.
  • Conduct trade studies to evaluate design methodologies and software/hardware selections.
  • Ensure a logical and systematic transformation of customer or product requirements into comprehensive systems solutions that consider technical, scheduling, and budgetary constraints.
  • May involve travel to other locations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or higher degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience OR 3 years of experience with a master's degree in a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in Systems Engineering activities, including operational concept development, architecture definition, requirements management, verification and validation, authoring whitepapers, and conducting trade studies.
  • 1+ years of experience as a Systems Engineer or Product Owner in an Agile software development environment, including User Story Development, backlog refinement, and release planning.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance investigated within the last 5 years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain SAP clearance.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Manhattan Beach (CA).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DoD SAP Clearance.
  • Experience with military aircraft mission planning systems.
  • Systems Engineering experience in migrating desktop applications to cloud-native environments.
  • Familiarity with mathematical algorithm development, MATLAB, and modeling/simulation.
  • Experience in UI/UX development.
  • Proficiency with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools.
  • Knowledge of scripting/programming languages such as Python, PowerShell, .Net, Java, C, and C#.
  • Experience in Software Security Engineering, IA/Cybersecurity, and industry platform hardening practices, such as DISA STIG Implementation.
  • Current DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security+).
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, small team environment.
Salary Range: $87,200 - $130,800
The salary range provided serves as a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman evaluates various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position, as well as the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director roles may qualify for Long Term Incentives. Furthermore, Northrop Grumman offers a variety of benefits, including health insurance, life and disability insurance, savings plans, company-paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and personal business.
