Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Cook County Health and Hospitals. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and support to our ophthalmology department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect and review patient medical history, determining the urgency of conditions and initiating appropriate care as necessary
  • Document collected information into the electronic medical record
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes to prepare patients for testing
  • Perform accurate and consistent patient care testing, including applanation tonometry, refractometry, and corneal topography
  • Record data results of patient care testing to identify and support the need for specialized care
  • Provide educational literature and instructions to patients concerning recommendations for eye care
  • Design and implement care plans, as directed
  • Check and maintain equipment calibration, and prepare necessary supplies for exams and procedures
  • Practice standards of sterile technique and infection control
  • Train staff on technical consultation and guidance to ensure accurate handling and operation of equipment
Requirements
  • Current and valid certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
  • Two years of work experience performing ophthalmic services
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
  • Bilingual
