Job Overview

The primary objective of this role is to ensure the optimal functioning of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems through preventive maintenance. This position often involves overseeing the work of other skilled tradespeople and managing the performance and outcomes of contractors and vendors engaged in service tasks for Carthage College.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designs, organizes, and implements a comprehensive HVAC maintenance schedule to uphold the quality and reliability of Carthage College's facilities, prioritizing safety.
  • Leads, trains, and supervises HVAC teams composed of in-house staff and contractors, ensuring high standards of workmanship.
  • Assesses and standardizes heating and air conditioning products to optimize cost efficiency.
  • Submits procurement requests aligned with the HVAC maintenance schedule to guarantee the availability of necessary materials and equipment.
  • Collaborates with department heads to coordinate maintenance activities, minimizing disruptions to ongoing operations.
  • Manages special projects involving external HVAC contractors.
  • Monitors and maintains stock levels of HVAC-related inventory.
  • Records and reports all labor hours and materials used in HVAC service activities.
  • Oversees the Central Environmental Control System for all buildings, making adjustments as needed to meet specific requirements.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains both digital and pneumatic control systems for HVAC and laboratory equipment.
  • Conducts diagnostics and repairs on conventional refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including ice machines and general cooling units.
  • Performs tests to identify equipment malfunctions, replacing faulty components as necessary.
  • Ensures the safe and efficient use of Carthage College tools and equipment assigned to the HVAC division.
  • Available for emergency repairs outside of regular working hours.
  • Completes additional tasks as directed by the Manager of Building and Grounds Services.

Qualifications:

To excel in this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of a technical or trade school program or equivalent apprenticeship.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in the HVAC field, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within the Physical Plant organization and represent the College positively.
  • Proficient in following both verbal and written instructions, with strong communication skills.
  • Commitment to adhering to safety policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to pursue further training to enhance skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant tools, materials, methods, and safety hazards in the HVAC trade.
  • Understanding of local and national fire codes and boiler safety practices.
  • Possession of required licensing for HVAC and boiler repairs in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Valid Driver's License.
