Job Overview

The primary objective of this role is to oversee the preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This position often entails supervising other skilled tradespeople and managing the performance and outputs of contractors and vendors engaged in work for Carthage College.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive HVAC maintenance schedule to ensure that services and repairs are conducted regularly, safeguarding the quality and reliability of Carthage College's systems while prioritizing safety.
  • Lead, train, and manage HVAC teams composed of in-house staff and contractors, ensuring high standards of workmanship.
  • Assess and standardize heating and air conditioning products to optimize cost-effectiveness.
  • Prepare purchase orders in line with the established HVAC maintenance schedule to guarantee the availability of necessary materials and equipment.
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure that facilities are accessible for maintenance, minimizing disruption to ongoing activities.
  • Coordinate special projects with external HVAC contractors.
  • Monitor and manage inventory levels related to HVAC supplies.
  • Maintain detailed records of labor hours and materials used in HVAC service operations.
  • Oversee the Central Environmental Control System for all buildings, making adjustments as required to meet specific building needs.
  • Install, repair, and maintain both digital and pneumatic control systems for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and laboratory equipment, including the calibration of related instruments.
  • Service and repair conventional mechanical refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including ice machines and general conditioning units.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests on equipment to identify malfunctions, replacing faulty components as necessary.
  • Ensure the safe handling and inventory management of Carthage College's HVAC tools and equipment.
  • Be available for emergency repairs outside of regular working hours.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager of Building and Grounds Services.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of a technical or trade school program or equivalent apprenticeship.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in the HVAC field, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the Physical Plant organization and effectively communicate with both skilled and unskilled personnel.
  • Proficiency in following both oral and written instructions, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly.
  • Commitment to adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to pursue ongoing training to enhance skills.
  • Strong knowledge of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with tools, materials, methods, and safety hazards associated with the HVAC trade.
  • Understanding of local and national fire codes relevant to HVAC work.
  • Possession of required licensing for HVAC and boiler repairs in the State of Wisconsin.
  • A valid Driver's License.
