Position Overview

The Surgical Instrument Processing Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining the operational efficiency of surgical environments and other associated units. This position is tasked with the meticulous management of surgical supplies, instruments, scopes, and equipment, ensuring they are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed, and tracked with the utmost safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with colleagues, visitors, and other personnel in alignment with the core values of Thomas Jefferson University.
  • Acknowledge and respect patients and their families in delivering safe, compassionate, and coordinated care tailored to their individual preferences and cultural beliefs.
  • Collaborate effectively with the interprofessional team, patients, families, and designated care partners.
  • Responsible for the disassembly, cleaning, inspection, preparation, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and trays for various departments, adhering to manufacturers' instructions and established aseptic techniques.
  • Prepare procedural case carts in accordance with departmental requirements.
  • Operate automated washers, cart washers, ultrasonic washers, and sterilizers safely and efficiently, following departmental policies and manufacturers' guidelines.
  • Conduct thorough examinations and tests on instruments to ensure their integrity, functionality, and cleanliness prior to sterilization or high-level disinfection.
  • Verify pre and post-sterilization quality indicators to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Report any malfunctions or issues with sterilization equipment to the appropriate leadership.
  • Utilize the Instrument Tracking System for the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical trays and items, maintaining accurate inventory levels and documentation.
  • Ensure proper labeling of each item with its name and/or expiration date.
  • Regularly check for expired items and assess the integrity of sterilized products, replacing or reporting as necessary.
  • May assist in the maintenance, assembly, and distribution of durable medical equipment, including code carts, based on departmental needs.
  • Participate in equipment rounds as required.
  • Provide off-shift and holiday call coverage as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Contribute to the onboarding process of new team members as appropriate.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a certified sterile processing technician training program is essential.

Experience:

A minimum of 6 months of relevant experience is preferred.

Certifications:

The sterile processing technician must maintain their required certification.

Employment Conditions:

Covid Vaccination is a requirement for employment at Thomas Jefferson University for individuals working in clinical settings. Candidates not currently vaccinated will need to receive the vaccination prior to their hire date unless an approved medical or religious exemption is obtained.
