POSITION SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision and in accordance with established protocols,
evaluates and addresses the needs of healthcare professionals regarding
infectious diseases and infection control practices. Implements a comprehensive
surveillance program for hospital-acquired infections based on internal standards,
external benchmarks when applicable, and legal requirements. Employs effective strategies to
enhance performance and practices, thereby minimizing the risk of infections acquired within the hospital. Provides training to the multidisciplinary team and community as needed.

The Infection Control Specialist II (ICS II) role is considered an advanced position. In
addition to the essential skills of the ICS I (consultant, educator, surveillance),
the ICS II is capable of executing complex projects with interdisciplinary teams that involve
senior management, nursing, and medical leadership. This role is performed independently
with minimal oversight from their direct supervisor.

The ICS II leads or co-leads cross-functional teams, directs implementation strategies, and
serves as a consultant or facilitator on infection control matters, including outbreak
investigations, proactive infection prevention initiatives, and complex case evaluations.
The ICS II develops and delivers educational programs to support staff, physicians,
and leadership in achieving infection control, safety, regulatory, and quality objectives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or a related health field is mandatory.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the healthcare sector is required, preferably in a hospital or outpatient setting.
  • Experience in leading significant change and project management while collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team and senior leadership.
  • A professional understanding of disease mechanisms, transmission methods of infectious diseases, clinical bacteriology, and clinical care practices as they pertain to the formulation and execution of nursing care plans is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid RN license in the State of Michigan is required if the applicant is a nurse.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is necessary.
