Medical Laboratory Specialist

As a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Henry Ford Health System, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You will be responsible for performing complex analytic procedures on blood and other body fluids or specimens, using manual techniques or laboratory instruments and information systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1.
Conduct routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems, for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treating disease.
You will be qualified to perform duties described here, and, in a given job situation, may or may not perform all of the duties as actual duties will pertain to the specific assignment.
2.Apply knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or develop solutions.
You will collaborate with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problems, including:
- Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release.
- Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states.
- Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic, and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results.
Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments, and/or laboratory information systems.
Following successful completion of competency testing, you may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.
4.Comply with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control.
You will maintain confidentiality of patient information.
5.Participate in various quality assessment and improvement activities, including proficiency testing, gathering data for quality assurance monitors, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees, and successfully completing regular competency assessments.
You will maintain the laboratory and procedures in inspection-ready condition.
Education/Experience Required:
1. Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratory discipline position and meet the education Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website at https://www.ascp.org; or possesses a categorical scientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB; or has met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.2. Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.3. Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions are required.
