As a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care in our outpatient setting. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse or physician/advanced practice provider, you will utilize your observational skills to observe nursing interventions and assist medical staff to ensure optimal care within established policies, procedures, and standards.
Key Responsibilities- Provides Therapeutic Patient Care: You will provide therapeutic patient care in accordance with the patient's established plan of care by physician/advanced practice providers and/or a registered nurse within the scope of practice.
- Transcribes Physician Orders: You will transcribe physician/advanced practice providers orders and direct by policy.
- Communicates with Healthcare Team: You will communicate directly with a registered nurse to institute changes in the plan of care and assist with the development of a nursing care plan.
- Administers Medication: You will administer specified medication appropriately and accurately following the provider's order and/or standing orders within the scope of practice.
- Executes Treatments: You will execute treatments such as urinary catheterizations, placement of intravenous catheters, bladder irrigations and instillations, suctioning procedures, throat irrigations and enemas, and utilizing equipment as required.
- Documents Patient Care: You will document care in Health Connect per policy, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
- Performs Related Patient Care Functions: You will perform related patient care functions such as taking temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure readings, wound care, and instructing patients in various self-administered treatments or procedures.
- Assists with Examinations and Treatments: You will assist physician/advanced practice providers or other medical staff personnel with examinations and treatments by selecting and passing instruments, providing support and restraint to the patient, draping, and other assistance as directed or required.
- Observes and Documents Patient Condition: You will observe and document patients' condition by gathering signs, symptoms, and reactions to therapy, to identify unexpected and/or significant findings, initiate appropriate emergency procedures as necessary, and report unusual conditions to the registered nurse/advanced practice provider as established by policy and procedure in a timely manner.
- May Volunteer to Start and Maintain IV Therapy: You may volunteer to start and maintain intravenous flow rate with certifications, notify registered nurse/advanced practice/physician of any problems. May discontinue IV therapy except intra-cath and central venous lines.
- May Volunteer to Start Perform Venipuncture/Blood Withdrawal: You may volunteer to start perform venipuncture/blood withdrawal with certifications.
- Collects and Processes Specimens: You will collect and process specimens per policy, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
- Provides Non-Complicated Teaching: You will provide non-complicated teaching following the registered nurse/advanced practice provider/physician plan for education. Report any identified learning needs and discharge barriers.
- Maintains a Clean and Safe Environment: You will ensure cleanliness of nursing module/station, patient exam room, and proper functioning of patient care equipment by visual inspection, routine testing, and other related methods. Provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
- Utilizes Effective Communication: You will utilize effective verbal and non-verbal forms of communication.
- Performs Departmental Back-Office Workflows: You will perform departmental back-office workflows including but not limited to proactive office encounter, successfully closing care gaps, patient outreach, access, and/or nurse visits.
- Participates in Staff Meetings and In-Service Programs: You will participate in staff meetings, and in-service programs.
- Assists with Ordering and Distribution/Stocking of Supplies and Equipment: You will assist in ordering and distribution/stocking of module/department supplies and equipment.
- Accepts Verbal and Telephone Orders: You will accept verbal and telephone orders from the physician/advanced practice providers.
- Supports Patient Communication and Message Management: You will support patient communication and message management including but not limited to patient emails, call center messages, and all other back-office messages.
- Administers Pulse Oximetry, Humidification Therapy, Spirometer, Oxygen Therapy, and Sputum Induction: You will administer pulse oximetry, humidification therapy, spirometer, oxygen therapy via mask or nasal cannula, oral, nasal, and trach suctioning, and sputum induction.
- Minimum Twelve (12) Months or Greater LVN Direct Patient Care Experience: You must have a minimum of twelve (12) months or greater LVN direct patient care experience within the last three (3) years. Direct patient care experience may include medical office, acute care, home care services, and skilled nursing facility.
- High School Diploma or GED: You must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Vocational Nurse License (California): You must have a Vocational Nurse License (California).
- Basic Life Support: You must have Basic Life Support.
