Key Responsibilities:

The Lead Aviation Test Specialist will play a crucial role in the design, development, and certification processes of our aircraft and ground control systems. This position will collaborate closely with fellow Test Pilots, Flight Test Engineers, systems engineers, and certification teams to validate and verify aircraft designs. As a vital contributor to the flight test risk management strategy, the role will guide our test certification initiatives, identify relevant industry standards, and prepare the team for testing that demonstrates compliance.

Core Duties Include:

  • Establishing and leading the test pilot department and its personnel.
  • Overseeing the training and proficiency of test pilots.
  • Providing expert test pilot insights for assigned programs and R&D efforts to address man-machine interface requirements for new aircraft designs.
  • Conducting initial flights on prototypes of new air vehicles.
  • Planning, developing, and executing flight tests on eVTOL Insights aircraft to ensure airworthiness and performance validation.
  • Collaborating closely with the Flight Test Manager and Chief Safety Officer to guarantee safe and effective ground and flight test operations.
  • Engaging with FAA test pilots and other aviation authority crews.
  • Developing standards and protocols while ensuring that lessons learned are effectively communicated across teams.
  • Guiding engineers on design specifications, simulator operations, test planning, test card creation, flight test methodologies, reporting, and proposal drafting.
  • Managing the processes related to the test vehicle pilot handbook.
  • Performing additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 15 years of flight test experience as a test pilot, demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility (an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience may be considered).
  • Graduation from a recognized Test Pilot School or equivalent experience.
  • FAA Commercial Pilot or ATP certificate (Fixed or Rotary Wing).
  • Instructor pilot certification and relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain the necessary FAA medical certification.
  • Both Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing pilot certificates.
  • A minimum of 2500 flight hours.
  • Experience in testing programs aimed at FAA/TCCA/EASA Certification.
  • Familiarity with Type Certification processes for fixed/rotary-wing aircraft.
  • A strong understanding of civil certification requirements from initial development through to Entry into Service activities.
  • Experience as a DER and/or ODA (or equivalent from other National Aviation Authorities).
  • Expertise in developing manuals for aircraft certification.
  • Experience in human-to-vehicle interface design, testing, and evaluation.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • A Master’s degree.
  • Flight test experience with autonomous aircraft and electric propulsion systems.
  • Experience conducting first flights of new or significantly modified aircraft.
