Dental Hygienist

We are seeking a highly skilled Dental Hygienist to join our team at the Indian Health Service. As a key member of our dental department, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive oral health education and dental hygiene treatment to diverse patient groups.
Responsibilities- Conduct preliminary examinations on new dental service patients, including reviewing patient medical history and examining teeth and periodontium for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease.
- Develop and interpret routine X-Rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities and traumatic occlusion.
- Assist the dentist by making repairs and adjustments to teeth, and instruct patients at chairside in oral hygiene, brushing and flossing techniques, and periodontal aids.
- Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist, and provide clinical services or health education to improve and maintain the oral health of patients.
- Apply fluorides or other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay, and administer local anesthetic agents.
- Remove excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth, and conduct dental health clinics for community groups to augment services of dentist.
- Must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.
- Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, performing duties such as examining and assessing patients, determining if systemic conditions are present and plan treatments, and providing oral health education services to individuals and groups.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation, and meet the requirements of the job by 11:59 pm (Eastern Standard Time) of the closing date.
This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit, and recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a one year service agreement will be required. Government housing may be available.
The Indian Health Service (IHS), National Health Service Corps (NHSC), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have student loan repayment programs for qualifying health disciplines. This is a competitive process separate from the hiring process.
