Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Officer V

GENERAL OVERVIEW
In this pivotal role, you will engage in advanced supervisory responsibilities overseeing correctional personnel dedicated to the direct care of adolescents within a residential rehabilitation facility. Your work will encompass managing the daily functions of a juvenile residential center, promoting youth rehabilitation, supervising minors, and guiding their personal growth in alignment with tailored treatment strategies. You may also be tasked with planning, delegating, and supervising the activities of other staff members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Officer, you will:
- Provide oversight and direct care for youth in a residential correctional environment, ensuring the safety and well-being of both youth and staff.
- Support, mentor, and coach fellow Juvenile Rehabilitation Officers, imparting effective techniques for engaging with youth.
- Facilitate youth progress in recognizing and managing their responses to stress and trauma, guiding them towards socially acceptable behaviors.
- Employ appropriate intervention strategies to address behavioral challenges, fostering a learning environment for youth.
- Maintain a safe and secure atmosphere, utilizing security protocols when necessary to protect all individuals involved.
- Engage with youth in a manner that balances structure with an understanding of their developmental needs, particularly those affected by complex trauma.
- Recognize and celebrate positive behaviors and achievements among youth, while addressing grievances in a constructive manner.
- May serve as the Campus Shift Administrator, overseeing operations during assigned shifts.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates under limited supervision, allowing for significant initiative and independent decision-making. You will be expected to work assigned shifts, which may exceed 40 hours per week, and may include on-call duties and occasional travel.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Newly appointed or rehired Juvenile Rehabilitation Officers who have been away for more than 18 months must complete a comprehensive training academy and on-the-job training. Those returning within 18 months will be reinstated to full-time status without the need for additional training.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Your role will include:
- Participating in competency-based training focused on trauma-informed correctional practices, while coaching others in these methodologies.
- Acting as a mentor to less experienced staff, particularly those in their initial year of service.
- Holding youth accountable for their actions in a manner that promotes learning and growth.
- Utilizing sound judgment to assess safety risks and determine necessary interventions.
- Assisting youth in recognizing their emotional triggers and developing self-regulation skills.
- Modeling effective self-regulation techniques to maintain composure during challenging situations.
- Collaborating with the Youth Service Team to contribute to each youth's treatment plan.
- Implementing and overseeing youth activities to ensure healthy engagement and positive role modeling.
QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify for this position, candidates must:
- Be at least 23 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Have a minimum of two years of full-time experience in supervising or providing rehabilitative services to youth or adults in relevant settings.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional qualifications that are advantageous include:
- A college degree or relevant coursework.
- Experience in roles such as correctional officer, case manager, or counselor.
