Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Program Director or designated representative, this role serves as a crucial advocate for families within the organization. The Family Support Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the perspectives and needs of families are integrated into all levels of service delivery, while also providing direct oversight to team members.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are representative of the types of work that may be performed. The absence of specific tasks does not preclude their inclusion if they are similar or related to this position.

  • Facilitate the establishment of forums for educational gatherings and meetings.
  • Lead parent advisory committees.
  • Create a comprehensive list of community self-help resources and establish support groups for children and youth.
  • Engage children and youth in advisory activities.
  • Compile a directory of natural community supports.
  • Conduct Parenting Workshops as needed.
  • Arrange transportation for parents attending activities and assist in organizing childcare for participation in support groups and educational events.
  • Identify parents for training sessions and workshops.
  • Clarify the grievance process for families.
  • Develop innovative parenting workshops focused on supporting children and youth with psychiatric challenges.
  • Notify the Family Coordinator of all groups and classes offered, ensuring timely communication about openings.
  • Participate in all relevant advocacy meetings and collaborative team discussions.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a holistic approach when working with families, providing outreach to new families.
  • Responsibilities may encompass in-school assistance, in-home support, mentoring, skills development, crisis intervention, problem-solving, parental guidance, and educational support as requested.
  • Provide immediate intervention during crises, ensuring resolution and notifying necessary parties or agencies.
  • Act as a liaison with community resources, developing a list of supports related to housing, childcare, transportation, education, recreation, and medication assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: A typical pathway to acquiring the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position includes obtaining a High School diploma or GED, along with less than two years of full-time experience in a mental health-related field providing direct services.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid California driver's license and current vehicle insurance/registration.
  • Reliable transportation that meets safety inspection standards if over five years old, excluding two-wheeled vehicles.

Work Schedule: Part-Time, up to 25 hours per week.
