Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Department of Transportation, the incumbent is responsible for providing compliance documents in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations applicable to cultural resources, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), for the most complex aspects of cultural resource compliance for transportation projects. The incumbent will serve as the subject matter expert in the field of archaeology within the branch, supporting other staff including Environmental Scientists, Environmental Planners, and Associate Environmental Planners.

Responsibilities
  • Provide compliance documents in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations applicable to cultural resources.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in the field of archaeology within the branch.
  • Support other staff including Environmental Scientists, Environmental Planners, and Associate Environmental Planners.
  • Develop and implement cultural resource management plans for transportation projects.
  • Conduct field investigations and surveys to identify and document cultural resources.
Requirements
  • Completion of educational courses as specified in the Class Specification.
  • A valid CA Drivers License is required when operating a state-owned vehicle.
  • Candidates must provide a copy of their degree, transcripts, license, and/or certificate, along with the State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.
Working Conditions

This position is located in Oakland, CA. The person must have the ability to work independently and effectively at the District 4 office and in a home office setting as part of the Department of Transportation's Telework Program. The work environment is fast-paced, busy, and requires considerable flexibility in managing time, priorities, and assignments. It can be demanding and/or stressful. The incumbent may be required to travel to other District offices and Headquarters or other meeting facilities, and/or to the sites of proposed projects. In the field, the incumbent may experience all climatic conditions, including rain.
