Position Overview:

The CNC Machinist is expected to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the entire machining process, including complex troubleshooting and process enhancement. This role involves setting up and operating various machine tools to produce precision components and instruments. This includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments, as well as the fabrication and modification of parts for machine tools or the maintenance of industrial machines, utilizing knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and comprehend setup sheets, specifications, and drawings to ascertain setup procedures, machining sequences, and dimensions of the finished workpiece.
  • Attach fixtures to machines and position and secure workpieces in fixtures according to setup instructions.
  • Select and install appropriate cutting tools.
  • Load programs into the machine control unit or enter commands to retrieve machine instructions from the database.
  • Manipulate controls and enter commands to index cutting tools to specified set points and initiate machine operations.
  • Monitor machine operations to identify malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Change cutting tools and reposition workpieces during the machining process as directed in the instructions.
  • Measure and inspect the first workpiece for compliance with specifications and quality standards.
  • Machine high-tolerance components to drawing specifications primarily using lathe and milling machines.
  • Fabricate specialty parts as required.
  • Propose enhancements to existing processes.
  • Conduct operations in a safe manner, adhering to all safety rules and policies.
  • Maintain machinery in optimal working condition.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Actively participate in identifying and driving Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 2 years in a machine shop environment is preferred.

At least 2 years of experience in a mechanical field.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. / 23 kilograms.

Typical work is conducted in a manufacturing environment or at customer sites.

Required to stand for extended periods and may involve heavy manual labor.

Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, stoop, reach, lift, push, pull, and carry items is essential.

Exposure to loud noises is expected.

Capability to wear personal protective equipment is necessary.

Familiarity with and prior experience in implementing Continuous Improvement (CI) practices is advantageous.

Experience with Lean/Six Sigma methodologies is a plus.
