About the position of Judicial Security Specialist
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enforce the entry and identification protocols of the District.
- Conduct tests and report on emergency equipment functionality.
- Perform patrols of court facilities and surrounding grounds in line with established post orders.
- Staff USMS authorized stationary posts as required.
- Provide vigilant surveillance on incoming traffic to entrances, identifying potential threats before they reach screening areas.
- Offer armed escort services for judges, court staff, jurors, and other designated individuals as necessary.
- Deliver security services for off-site judicial functions where access can be controlled and public screening is feasible.
- Direct traffic, manage lights on court property, and oversee vehicles and pedestrians as outlined in post orders.
- Occasionally assigned to ensure courtroom security during hearings.
- Maintain a security presence in the courtroom, enforcing federal laws and judicial orders within the courthouse.
- Safeguard any items found within court facilities, reporting them to the COR and completing necessary documentation within 24 hours.
- Keep supervisors informed of unusual occurrences and significant events as per post orders and protocols.
- Monitor alarms, radio communications, and other information sources, dispatching or informing others as authorized.
- Respond to and address fire alarms, burglary alarms, requests for assistance, and criminal activities appropriately.
- Screen and inspect vehicles and pedestrians entering or exiting the facility as directed by established protocols.
- Utilize issued equipment correctly and responsibly.
- Prevent the entry or exit of prohibited items from the facility.
- Escort individuals or vehicles in accordance with established guidelines.
- Maintain all necessary licensing, certifications, training, and records for legal employment as a Security Officer.
- Use communication devices in accordance with established rules.
- Monitor all equipment, guarding against loss or damage, and report any incidents immediately.
- Perform duties regardless of weather conditions.
- Log Property Pass numbers for authorized movements of property and equipment.
- Ensure the security of government property, detaining individuals when necessary, and reporting unauthorized removals.
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings and facilities.
- Issue required identification badges or passes to authorized personnel.
- Monitor electronic access control systems and report any violations.
- Oversee radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems and respond to alarms indicating unauthorized removal of government property.
- Grant access to restricted areas during non-working hours to authorized personnel as per established procedures.
- Monitor facility equipment and utility systems, reporting deficiencies to the appropriate personnel.
- Conduct random surveillance of buildings to detect unauthorized or inappropriate activities.
- Perform random surveillance of perimeter fences for breaches and unauthorized activities.
- Provide additional security support for scheduled events or unscheduled emergencies as requested by supervisors.
- Maintain activity logs and administrative documents as required by contract.
- Collaborate with local, state, or federal law enforcement, locating and protecting necessary evidence, and testifying as needed in judicial proceedings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum age of 21 years.
- At least 3 years of verifiable civilian law enforcement experience or equivalent military law enforcement experience, including general arrest authority within the last seven years.
- Completion of a certified law enforcement training academy recognized by federal, state, or local authorities.
- Successful completion of pre-placement screening, including a criminal background check and financial review.
- Ability to pass criminal background checks, drug tests, and physical examinations.
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted state driver's license.
- Fluency in reading, speaking, and writing in English.

Work is typically conducted in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Standard business hours are Monday through Friday, with the possibility of extended or weekend hours as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
May require lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 lbs. Involves intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending throughout the workday.
