Job Summary:

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a skilled professional to provide on-site support in the VRS Retirement Counseling Center. As a Retirement Benefits Counselor, you will engage with VRS members and retirees through various communication formats to increase their understanding of VRS retirement benefits and services.

This role will work independently, providing retirement counseling virtually, in person, or by phone. Essential duties include:

  • Answering phone calls and responding to inquiries and requests.
  • Providing advanced-level retirement counseling to VRS members regarding retirement benefits, including complex retirement estimate calculations and information on VRS services.
  • Educating members on and providing assistance in navigating Medicare eligibility and supplemental insurance.
  • Providing email and workflow support as assigned.
  • Performing various other duties and participating in special projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience counseling on benefits, working in Human Resources managing benefits, or in a high-volume customer service position, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Active listening skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent ability to communicate complex information orally and in writing.
  • Ability to show professionalism, empathy, and confidence.
  • Proficiency in math.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team solving problems and managing priorities.

Work Environment:

This position works on-site Monday through Friday in the VRS Retirement Counseling Center.
