Job Summary:

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a skilled Surgical Technician to join our team in the Operating Room. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care and supporting our mission to provide exceptional healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Practice Standards: Comply with organizational policies and procedures, including attendance and reliability standards. Monitor and take corrective action to prevent recurring absences. Return promptly from breaks and schedule them to provide adequate coverage. Restrict personal business to non-patient care areas during break times. Comply with Kaiser's Time Keeping Policy to accurately reflect productive time worked. Stay informed of organizational policies and current information as provided by the employer. Comply with contractual responsibilities related to work schedule. Participate in unit Quality Assurance Programs. Maintain current knowledge and skill base with a personal commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Utilize professional communication techniques. Maintain confidentiality of all patient and organizational records. (HIPAA Standards). Promote collaboration and professional interaction with the healthcare team. Promote professional conduct, knowing and complying with department Standards of Behavior. (group norms) Promote and utilize professional communication techniques. Attend inservices related to job description as appropriate. Demonstrate awareness of new concepts and skills. Attend and constructively participate in staff meetings. Demonstrate awareness of new information posted in the communication notebook.
  • Assessment Standard: Communicate information to maintain continuity of care. Communicate with patients, families, and other staff in a professional and courteous manner. Obtain and demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to provide appropriate population-based and culturally sensitive care to patients and families through education, training, and experience. Participate in accurate pre-operative briefing and time out. Provide continuous reassessment through the intraoperative period.
  • Planning Standard: Utilize knowledge of the type of procedure to plan for appropriate setup. Obtain and demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to provide age-appropriate care to patients through education, training, and experience.
  • Implementation Standard: Initiate appropriate measures based on protocol for the management of the intraoperative patient. Apply principles of aseptic technique. Evaluate sterile packs and supplies. Provide a well-organized sterile area. Be aware of procedures progression and anticipate the needs of the team, observing sterile technique at all times. Perform all necessary procedures correctly to ensure patient safety intraoperatively. Apply and assist with the principles of correct body alignment in positioning and transferring patients. Examine unused equipment and instruments for gross contamination and transport covered used instruments to the utility room. Responsible for sterile core activities, able to prioritize duties: Completion of picking case carts, restocking, reordering supplies as needed, assisting with O.R. room needs as necessary. Assist with appropriate measures in emergency situations. Work in conjunction with the Circulator in preparation for the next scheduled case. Initiate and facilitate room turnovers: Light housekeeping duties, procurement of equipment, supplies, and X-Rays. Restocking of unused supplies and equipment. Participate in the reprocessing process.
Requirements:
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology.
  • License, Certification, Registration: Basic Life Support required at hire, Surgical Technologist Certificate required at hire.
  • Additional Requirements: Knowledge of sterile core area, knowledge of sterile technique; operating room procedures and equipment; dexterity with hands; effective relationships with people; ability to exercise good judgment and discipline. Able to follow instruction.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) to five (5) years of scrubbing experience in all surgical procedures in inpatient or ambulatory O.R. setting. Ability to rotate through sterile core area. Clean and reprocess instruments, stock supplies, and pick case carts.
