Position Overview

Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician plays a vital role in delivering compassionate care to patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. This position is essential in ensuring a safe and clean environment for patients while performing duties in a responsible manner. The technician maintains clinical and professional competencies tailored to the specific needs of the patient demographic served.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist patients with daily living activities.
- Support personal hygiene needs of patients.
- Measure and record vital signs, height, and weight.
- Aid in feeding and mobility of patients following established protocols.
- Ensure patient rooms are kept clean and organized.
- Monitor and report any changes in patient conditions.
- Guide patients and families through the unit, providing safety instructions.
- Perform clerical tasks such as answering phones, data entry, and maintaining medical records.
- Manage inventory of medical supplies.

Perform tasks as outlined in the Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II responsibilities (as per the North Carolina Board of Nursing guidelines).

Carry out technical duties with appropriate training, including administering 12-Lead Electrocardiogram tests and routine venipuncture.


Physical Requirements

This role requires various physical activities including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, and pushing. The ability to lift and support weights of up to 35 pounds is necessary for handling patients and medical equipment. Proficiency in English is required for effective communication. Manual dexterity is essential, and physical abilities testing may be required.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

- High School Diploma or GED is mandatory.
- Current registration with the DFS Nurse Aide Registry as a Nurse Aide I or with the North Carolina Board of Nursing as a Nurse Aide II is required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is necessary according to policy guidelines.

Patient Population Served

Demonstrates an understanding of growth and development principles and possesses the skills necessary to cater to the ages, cultures, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.

Protected Health Information

Access to protected health information (PHI) will be limited to what is necessary for job functions. Information will be shared strictly on a need-to-know basis for work-related purposes.

Access to verbal, written, and electronic PHI is determined based on job responsibilities and level within the organization. Computerized access to PHI is controlled through user ID and password.
Machines, Tools, and Equipment

Utilization of various equipment is required, including blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, thermometers, personal protective gear, wheelchairs, stretchers, utility carts, and other clinical tools.
