Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Block Storage Solutions

The Apple Cloud infrastructure is extensive, and the storage Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams are developing and managing the next generation of distributed storage systems that underpin Apple's most vital services. Operating at our scale, across multiple geographically dispersed data centers, and catering to users with exceptionally large data presents unique challenges. As a storage SRE at Apple, you will tackle these challenges using your profound knowledge of storage, data analysis, programming, collaboration, and expertise in Linux system internals.
Role Overview
We are seeking experienced software and systems engineers to become part of the Block Storage SRE team at Apple. This position entails significant individual responsibility and influence over the platform's direction, shaping its utilization by numerous critical Apple Cloud services for the foreseeable future. You are a professional with innovative ideas and a genuine enthusiasm for software delivered as a service, aimed at enhancing reuse, efficiency, and simplicity. Your contributions will impact hundreds of millions of users and be crucial to the success of both current and future Apple features.
At Apple Cloud, we utilize a combination of open-source, vendor-licensed, and internally developed tools for various functions, including system configuration management, provisioning, software development and deployment, logging, and monitoring. Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a Site Reliability Engineer or Infrastructure Software Development role.
- Strong motivation to automate manual operations and enhance them with well-defined and tested APIs.
- Knowledge of best practices for deploying storage systems, including the implications of physical and virtual deployment models on change management, failure domains, and hardware lifecycle management.
- Experience in deploying, supporting, and monitoring new and existing services, platforms, and application stacks.
- Proficient in SRE principles, such as monitoring, alerting, error budgets, fault analysis, and other common concepts in reliability engineering. Skilled at identifying opportunities to minimize manual work through improvements in code and processes.
- Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases (e.g., Cassandra, Postgres, RocksDB).
- BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in building, operating, and scaling distributed storage systems in private, public, or hybrid cloud environments.
- Ability to design, author, review, and release code in one or more high-level languages (e.g., Go (preferred), Rust, Python, Java, etc.).
- Solid understanding of block, object, and file storage solutions in Linux (e.g., LVM, XFS, ext4, S3, Ceph, Gluster, NFS).
- Familiarity with microservices architecture and container orchestration using Kubernetes.
- Understanding of Linux internals, standard networking protocols, and distributed systems.
- Experience with provisioning, data migration, backup and recovery, large-scale testing, disaster recovery, and capacity planning.
At Apple, base pay is one component of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $138,900 and $256,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become shareholders through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Benefits include comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and reimbursement for certain educational expenses related to career advancement at Apple. Additionally, this role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation assistance.
