Job Summary

This is a challenging opportunity to join the City of Pontiac's Public Works Department as a Laborer II. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks, including operating heavy and light-duty equipment, performing maintenance and construction-related tasks, and assisting with snow removal and tree trimming activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment, such as plow trucks, tractors, backhoes, and front-end loaders, to perform maintenance and construction-related tasks.
  • Assist with snow removal and tree trimming activities, utilizing light and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Perform general labor tasks, including maintenance of buildings and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relations with coworkers, other City staff, and the public.
  • Comply with and ensure safe work standards and practices.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years of cumulative experience in building maintenance, construction, landscaping, or a similar field.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with no more than 5 points on record and no drug or alcohol-related driving convictions.
  • Commercial driver's license - Type A or B and no restrictions from operating a vehicle with air brakes.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner's Certificate with a negative drug screen.
Working Conditions

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, including walking for long periods, frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing up to 80 pounds, and moving in areas of difficult or hazardous access.

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and kneel. The candidate should be able to clearly hear constituents when speaking in person or on the telephone.
