Upon successful completion of the Law Enforcement Officer certification, the Trainee Law Enforcement Officer will be elevated to the position of Police Officer I.
OVERVIEW
A Trainee Law Enforcement Officer will attend and successfully complete the Utah POST Academy. After completion, the Trainee will advance to Police Officer I, who, under general supervision, will undertake a variety of responsibilities related to law enforcement and crime prevention; will conduct and engage in general investigations of offenses, incidents, and criminal cases; will manage traffic flow and enforce state and local traffic laws; will serve in various law enforcement roles, and will perform a range of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department.
SUPERVISION
No supervisory responsibilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend, engage in, and successfully complete a P.O.S.T. certified police training academy, passing all required classes, scenarios, physical training, and other assigned duties.
- Participate in rigorous physical training.
- Acquire knowledge in the use and maintenance of firearms, chemical agents, and other weapons.
- Learn to operate a motor vehicle safely under both normal and emergency conditions.
- Comprehend and execute oral and written instructions.
- Demonstrate command presence in conflict situations.
- Communicate clearly and learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.
- Develop skills to write clear, comprehensive, and accurate reports, with correct grammar and spelling.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals encountered during employment; learn principles and practices of effective interpersonal communication and quality customer service.
- Understand, interpret, and apply criminal and civil laws, court decisions, regulations, policies, and procedures, particularly regarding arrest laws, use of force, custody, search and seizure, juvenile laws, property crimes, and more.
- Implement police methods and procedures including patrol techniques, vehicle stops, response to active crimes, suspect apprehension, defensive tactics, traffic enforcement, and crowd control.
- Manage crime scenes, forensics, evidence collection, preservation, and presentation; learn identification techniques and interviewing methods.
- Acquire first aid, CPR, hazardous materials awareness, emergency management, and Incident Command System knowledge.
- Understand community policing philosophy, crime prevention, victimology/crisis intervention, and cultural diversity.
- Utilize modern law enforcement equipment, communication devices, computers, and information systems.
- Upon successful completion of academy training and graduation, the individual will receive further training as a sworn Police Officer in the Field Training Officer Program and will be responsible for performing related duties as assigned.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Functions and objectives of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
- Basic principles of criminal law.
- Principles and practices of community policing.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
- Operating firearms and other modern police equipment.
- Using modern office equipment including computers and software.
- Safely operating a motor vehicle.
- Learn modern police methods and procedures related to patrol, apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, traffic control, and investigative techniques.
- Understand modern investigative methods including interviewing techniques.
- Comprehend law enforcement theory, principles, and practices and their application to various services and programs.
- Familiarize with local geography, city streets, public buildings, and businesses.
- Stay updated on recent court decisions and their impact on department operations.
- Learn self-defense tactics.
- Interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations, particularly regarding apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence, and records maintenance.
- Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate, and utilize facts and evidence.
- Understand and explain city and department policies and procedures.
- Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and locations.
- Prepare clear and concise reports.
- Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the appropriate course of action.
- Act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Engage with the public tactfully and effectively.
- Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively.
- Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive working relationships with those encountered during work.
Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of employment offer.
Education: High school diploma or GED; two years of college education is preferred.
Experience: No prior experience required.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Utah Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain POST Basic Law Enforcement Certification upon completion of POST certification training.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 75% of body weight; exposure to various environmental conditions; ability to travel to different locations; availability for shift work.
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent places their life and personal safety at risk.
