Job Overview

Position Classification: This role may be designated as Police Officer I or II based on qualifications and experience.

Compensation: Lateral transfers may qualify for salary adjustments reflecting prior law enforcement experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general oversight, this position involves a range of responsibilities aimed at upholding laws and preventing criminal activities. Duties include conducting investigations into crimes, managing traffic flow, and serving in various specialized roles such as Patrol Officer, Detective, or K-9 Officer, among others. This is a merit-based role with protections under relevant state laws.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory duties are associated with this position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patrol assigned areas to maintain law and order, deter criminal activity, and ensure property security.
  • Respond to calls for service, including disturbances, accidents, and other incidents.
  • Conduct investigations, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and apprehend suspects.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies for effective crime resolution.
  • Engage with the community to address law enforcement concerns and promote crime prevention.
  • Document incidents and prepare reports on activities and arrests.
  • Manage custody and transport of detainees.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC DUTIES BY ASSIGNMENT

Patrol Officer:

  • Conduct routine patrols to safeguard lives and property.
  • Enforce laws and regulations, and prevent criminal acts.
  • Engage with the community to provide safety information and support.

Detective:

  • Conduct thorough investigations into criminal activities.
  • Prepare reports and collaborate with legal entities.

Field Training Officer:

  • Train and mentor new officers in law enforcement practices.

S.W.A.T. Officer:

  • Address high-risk situations with specialized tactical responses.

K-9 Officer:

  • Utilize police canines for searches and apprehensions.

Traffic Officer:

  • Monitor and enforce traffic laws and regulations.

D.A.R.E. Officer:

  • Educate youth on drug abuse prevention and safety.

School Resource Officer:

  • Engage with schools to ensure safety and address concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of employment offer.

Education: High school diploma or GED; two years of college education is preferred.

Experience: No prior experience is necessary.

Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification or enrollment in certification training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Functions of law enforcement agencies.
  • Basic criminal law principles.
  • Community policing practices.

Skills in:

  • Operating police equipment and vehicles.
  • Using modern office technology.

Ability to:

  • Learn and apply law enforcement methods.
  • Conduct interviews and gather evidence.
  • Analyze situations and respond appropriately.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical demands include the ability to perform various physical activities and endure exposure to different environmental conditions. Shift work may be required.
