Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic Foreman to join our Solid Waste Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading a skilled team of equipment mechanics in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, vehicles, and land support equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and direct a team of semi-skilled to skilled equipment mechanics, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Assign, direct, and supervise tasks, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in vehicles, heavy equipment, and other motorized equipment, and oversee complex repair projects.
  • Administer routine personnel matters, including interviewing applicants, hiring, assigning, scheduling, promoting, disciplining, and preparing reports.
  • Conduct quality control inspections on equipment being repaired and perform related work as required.
Requirements
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and six (6) years of experience in the repair of vehicles and/or heavy equipment, including lead/supervisory experience.
  • Valid NC Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Hazmat Endorsement.
  • Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) certification in brake systems and preventive maintenance inspections, and CFC recovery certification within one year of hire.
  • Master mechanics tool set.
  • Industrial physical examinations, including sight, hearing, cardiovascular, pulmonary, chest x-rays, blood pressure, blood sugar, and lead levels, as well as chemistry profiles, after employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and standard mechanical components of automotive and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work and shop operations.
  • Knowledge of principles of organization, administration, and supervision.
  • Skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, vehicles, and related equipment.
  • Ability to exercise analytical judgment in detecting malfunctions in mechanical equipment, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and assign, direct, and supervise a staff of semi-skilled to skilled mechanics.
  • Ability to perform manual labor associated with mechanical repair work, establish and maintain effective working relationships, understand and determine applicability of existing safety and health procedures, and ensure their proper application for work processes.
Conditions of Employment

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
