Position Overview:

Become a vital member of the City of West Hollywood as an Aquatic Safety Officer. This role is perfect for individuals enthusiastic about swimming and community engagement. Previous lifeguarding experience is not necessary; comprehensive training will be provided. Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for various shifts, weekends, and holidays, is crucial.

In this position, you will play a key role in delivering swim instruction, supporting aquatic programs, and ensuring a safe and welcoming pool atmosphere. Your knowledge of water safety, lifesaving methods, and CPR/First Aid will be essential in safeguarding all visitors.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Safety Supervision: Monitor and assist pool users, execute rescues and lifesaving actions as needed, and uphold water safety regulations.
  • Swim Instruction: Conduct swim lessons for individuals across all age groups and skill levels, and facilitate water aerobics classes.
  • Program Support: Aid in the coaching and management of various aquatic programs and events.
  • Customer Engagement: Deliver exceptional service to pool visitors, respond to inquiries, and manage registration and fee collection.
  • Facility Upkeep: Perform basic maintenance tasks such as water quality testing, cleaning, and general facility maintenance.
Selection Process: Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the recruitment process, which includes:
  • Application Deadline: Open Continuous.
  • In-person Interview and Skills Assessment: Candidates will be assessed on their water skills.
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete the Aquatics Academy. Continued employment is contingent upon passing the Academy and attending mandatory training sessions.
Essential Functions:

As an Aquatic Safety Officer, you will be responsible for:
  • Ensuring the safety of all pool patrons while providing excellent customer service and managing fee collection.
  • Conducting routine pool maintenance, including water testing and facility cleaning.
  • Teaching swimming lessons and leading exercise classes.
  • Handling customer inquiries and providing information about aquatic programs.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Familiarity with aquatic programs and facilities, teamwork skills, and customer service experience are advantageous.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • StarGuard Elite Lifeguard Certification
  • Starfish Aquatics Swim Instructor Certification
Other Requirements:
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule.
  • Candidates over 18 must complete a background questionnaire.
  • Selected candidates will undergo a physical and background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Pool safety protocols and regulations.
  • Lifesaving techniques and swim instruction methods.
  • Basic maintenance and repair of pool equipment.
Skills in:
  • Handling pool chemicals safely.
  • Teaching swimming and fitness classes.
  • Utilizing discretion and independent judgment.
Abilities:
  • Pass water skills assessments and swim proficiency tests.
  • Communicate effectively in English.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships.
While performing the essential functions of this role, the employee may be exposed to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and moderate noise levels. This position is temporary and does not include benefits beyond those mandated by law.
