York, Pennsylvania, United States Johnson Controls Full time

Position Overview:

We are in search of a seasoned Mechanical Engineer to become a vital part of our federal team. The primary objective of Johnson Controls Navy Systems (JCNS) is to deliver advanced Chilled Water Air Conditioning (A/C) Plants, Refrigeration Systems, and related apparatus to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. Our high-performance products are meticulously designed, manufactured, and tested to meet military and other rigorous customer standards.

Role Responsibilities:

This role is integral to the JCNS engineering team. Under the mentorship of an engineering manager, the engineer will assist in:

  • Supporting the production of current Navy products, including both variable speed, oil-free, magnetic bearing systems and oil-lubricated, fixed-speed systems.
  • Designing and developing innovative water-cooled chillers and refrigeration units tailored for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Conducting various engineering tasks to troubleshoot technical challenges and validate components.

Technical Focus:

This team leverages refrigerant compressor technology alongside mechanical design principles, manufacturing techniques, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and electromechanical systems to design, manufacture, and test centrifugal compressors, chillers, and their associated components.

Benefits:

  • Eligible for benefits from the first day of employment.
  • Three weeks of paid vacation annually.
  • Minimal travel requirements, estimated at less than 10%.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in addressing production challenges related to the manufacturing and testing of Navy products.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot mechanical sub-components and systems by observing operational equipment and reviewing test data.
  • Generate technical documentation and customer submittals for internal and external use.
  • Support customer issue resolution in the field related to JCNS products and assist the JCNS Parts & Service Group.
  • Engage in mechanical design, selection, and release of refrigerant compressors and associated systems, performing necessary engineering calculations to meet performance, safety, and reliability standards.
  • Collaborate closely with the design and drafting team to create chiller layout concepts and system configurations.
  • Lead or collaborate with team members and subcontractors in qualification and risk mitigation testing, including military shock, vibration, electromagnetic interference, refrigerant performance, and acoustic testing.
  • Assist in developing schedules and communicate project status to management while working with cross-functional teams to achieve objectives.
  • Prepare and execute test programs to validate the performance and reliability of mechanical sub-components and systems.
  • Review complex customer specifications and apply the requirements to develop compliant designs, with knowledge of military and ASTM/ASME specifications being advantageous.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn manufacturing processes and apply that knowledge during the design phase to achieve Design for Manufacturability goals.
  • Contribute to the development of Technical and Cost Proposals for new design initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electro-Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Over 10 years of experience in mechanical/electromechanical equipment manufacturing, design, testing, and release.
  • U.S. citizenship with the capability and willingness to obtain and maintain an active DoD security clearance.
  • Ability to travel within the United States to resolve operational issues onboard Navy vessels or support third-party testing facilities, with travel estimated at less than 10%.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background and knowledge in refrigeration systems and components, such as compressors and heat exchangers, is a plus.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently while also collaborating with manufacturing teams, suppliers, and subject matter experts across various disciplines to resolve issues.
