Job Summary

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments is seeking a highly skilled Public Safety Planner II, III, or IV to join our team. This professional position plays a critical role in regional homeland security and public safety, supporting the administration of the National Capital Region's (NCR) Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify CBRNE equipment needs in the region and organize training and exercise events.
  • Document national best practices and assist with tracking program expenses.
  • Provide support to various working groups within COG's Department of Homeland Security and Public Safety (DHSPS).
  • Assist with the procurement and tracking of CBRNE detection equipment for distribution to emergency response agencies throughout the NCR.
  • Facilitate meetings with stakeholders, documenting and tracking action items and decision-making.
  • Draft and prepare agendas, meeting materials, and summaries for committees and working groups.
  • Organize, coordinate, document, track outcomes, and conduct follow-up activities for meetings, working groups, committees, and similar entities.
  • Draft and prepare reports, fact sheets, and other documents on topics related to CBRNE and other homeland security and public safety topics.
  • Support the development and implementation of project work plans for committees and working groups.
  • Research and synthesize information on CBRNE detection and response best practices.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant professional field, with a minimum of two years of office experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, including experience condensing complex topics to concise summaries.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness in written documents and communications.
  • Ability to maintain accurate files, multitask, and detail-orientated with high degree of accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A master's degree from an accredited university.
  • Thorough knowledge of intergovernmental coordination and hazardous materials.
  • Experience in data visualization, graphic design, and public outreach methods.
  • Professional certification in a relevant field.
Work Environment

This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, use hands to handle or feel objects or controls, and talk or hear. Occasional fieldwork may be required, involving the operation of a motor vehicle to travel to various locations.
