The role of a Freight Train Operator encompasses various responsibilities, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of locomotives. This position requires adherence to all safety protocols, railroad regulations, and operational guidelines set forth by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain compliance with train orders, signals, and safety regulations
  • Conduct job briefings and pre-trip inspections
  • Operate air brakes and manage train handling procedures
  • Ensure proper use of signals, including fixed and hand signals
  • Inspect locomotives before departure and troubleshoot any issues
  • Communicate effectively via radio and telephone
  • Monitor surroundings for safety and suspicious activities

Qualifications Required:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Two years of verifiable work experience or relevant college education
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Capability to work in varying shift schedules and on-call basis
  • Demonstrated auditory and visual acuity

The ASARCO LLC is dedicated to the ongoing education of certified Engineers, ensuring they remain knowledgeable about safety practices and operational rules. Re-certification occurs every 36 months, incorporating formal training and assessments.

Training will cover essential topics such as Safety Rules, Operating Rules, and applicable Federal Regulations, with an emphasis on new regulations that impact safety and operational efficiency.
