Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Biomedical Engineer to join our team at the Department of Veterans Affairs. As a Biomedical Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medical equipment and technology in our healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the management of medical equipment and technology.
  • Conduct capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment, including initial concept, installation, and effective implementation.
  • Manage a recall and safety alert program for medical devices, including medical device incident investigations to ensure compliance with patient safety goals, Safe Medical Device Act (SMDA), and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements.
  • Conduct equipment management programs that meet current TJC and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements.
  • Advise clinical and administrative staff on medical engineering technology, including existing and emerging technology addressing viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and/or safety.
  • Act as the subject matter expert in the field of biomedical engineering, directly supporting specialized clinical technology, including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance.
  • Evaluate the patient safety features of electrical equipment and oversee the patient electrical safety program for the medical center.
  • Monitor the work of service contractors to ensure that the work performance meets the needs of the medical center and conforms to the terms of the contract.
  • Protect printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree or Higher in Engineering from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
  • Completion of at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower level, (GS-13), and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
  • Ability to implement and/or sustain an equipment management or biomedical research program that meets The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), or other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to develop material for a continuing education program for clinical or research staff, addressing the principles and application of medical technology, and/or biomedical theory used in healthcare.
  • Ability to advise staff on emerging medical technology, or research procedures, while keeping abreast of changes in such technology, and utilizing the information to solve biomedical engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of basic project management principles, as applied to the healthcare setting and medical equipment, and information system implementation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) and a bachelor's degree not listed above.
  • Ability to apply advanced knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, guidelines, and standards associated with biomedical engineering to support the needs of multiple facilities.
  • Ability to effectively convey highly technical information to a wide variety of individuals, including technical and professional clinical staff, and senior level managers at the facility, VISN and/or national level.
  • Ability to manage a recall and safety alert program for medical devices, including medical device incident investigations to ensure compliance with patient safety goals, SMDA, and TJC requirements for multiple facilities.
  • Ability to apply advanced knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, and practices of biomedical engineering, including the ability to keep abreast of changes in technology and utilize the information gained in the solution of biomedical engineering problems to meet operational needs of multiple facilities.
