North Haven, Connecticut, United States Yale New Haven Health Full time
Overview

At Yale New Haven Health, we believe that every team member should embrace our Vision, support our Mission, and embody our Values. These core principles - integrity, patient-centered care, respect, accountability, and compassion - are essential in guiding our daily actions as professionals.

The Sleep Study Technologist, under the supervision of the lead technologist and Program Manager, is responsible for preparing patients and conducting overnight physiological assessments, known as polysomnograms (PSG). This role involves collecting vital signs and relevant data to facilitate accurate interpretation by the physician or polysomnographer, adhering to established protocols and procedures. The technologist must maintain alertness in a calm environment and know when to consult with the supervising physician regarding patient conditions.

Responsibilities
  • 1. Prepare patients and conduct overnight physiological assessments (PSG), ensuring accurate data collection for physician interpretation in accordance with established guidelines.
    • 1.1 Manage data acquisition by formatting optical disks, retrieving, and archiving information in the computer system, while anticipating data space limitations to prevent loss during studies.
  • 2. Identify and respond appropriately to any medical issues or physiological events, particularly respiratory concerns, seizures, or cardiac irregularities, including notifying the Medical Director and activating emergency protocols as necessary.
    • 2.1 Ensure emergency equipment (suction, ambu bag, airway devices, oxygen supply) is operational before commencing studies.
  • 3. Collaborate effectively with staff, patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
    • 3.1 Engage professionally to address and resolve patient care concerns or conflicts.
  • 4. Maintain vigilance in a non-stimulating environment, knowing when to consult nursing or medical staff regarding patient status. Attention to detail is crucial, as the quality of PSG data is the technologist's responsibility.
  • 5. Work primarily during overnight shifts, requiring the ability to remain alert. Review patient records, orders, and protocols to identify sleep/wake or respiratory issues, and gather necessary information for accurate physician interpretation.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

High school diploma required. Previous education in allied health or life sciences is beneficial for understanding normal and abnormal physiology and operating complex equipment used in polysomnography. Preferred qualifications include Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), or NBRC Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS) credentials.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a healthcare-related field is required.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Ability to comprehend normal cardiorespiratory, neurological, and sleep/wake physiology is essential.
